What is Elbow Bursitis?

Elbow bursitis is a condition where the small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion the bones and soft tissues in the elbow become inflamed. This can occur in the olecranon bursa at the tip of the elbow or the biceps and triceps bursae.

The most common causes include repetitive pressure or friction on the elbow, such as from leaning on a hard surface, a direct blow or fall onto the elbow, infection, and certain medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or gout.

Symptoms include swelling, pain, and tenderness at the tip or back of the elbow. The skin may appear red or warm to the touch. Elbow movement may be painful or limited. In cases of septic bursitis, fever, chills, and excessive redness may be present.

Diagnosis involves a physical examination to assess swelling, tenderness, and range of motion. The surgeon may aspirate fluid from the bursa to check for signs of infection or gout. Imaging tests may be ordered to rule out other conditions.

Conservative treatment options for elbow bursitis include rest, activity modification, and compression. Ice therapy and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can help manage pain and inflammation. Physical therapy can help maintain range of motion.

Interventional treatment options include aspiration of the bursa to remove excess fluid and corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation. If the bursa is infected, antibiotics will be prescribed. Surgical removal of the bursa may be considered.

The goal of treatment is to reduce pain and inflammation, prevent complications such as infection, and restore normal function of the elbow joint. Prevention through elbow protection and movement modifications is important to avoid recurrence.
