What is Spinal Arthritis?

Spinal arthritis is a degenerative condition that affects the joints and discs in the spine, causing inflammation, stiffness, and pain. It is a common form of arthritis that can occur in any part of the spine, from the neck to the lower back.

The most common causes of spinal arthritis include age-related wear and tear, previous injuries to the spine, genetics, and certain autoimmune disorders. Obesity and a sedentary lifestyle can also contribute to the development of spinal arthritis.

Symptoms of spinal arthritis may include chronic back pain, stiffness, reduced flexibility, and a grinding sensation when moving the spine. In some cases, nerve compression can cause numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms or legs.

Diagnosing spinal arthritis involves a physical examination, medical history review, and imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans. Blood tests may be ordered to rule out other conditions or to check for inflammatory markers.

Conservative treatment options for spinal arthritis include physical therapy, exercise, weight management, hot and cold therapy, and medications such as NSAIDs, muscle relaxants, or pain relievers.

Interventional treatment options include corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation, regenerative medicine to heal diseased tissue, or surgery in severe cases. Surgical options may include spinal fusion, laminectomy, or disc replacement.

The goal is to reduce pain, improve mobility and function, and prevent further joint damage. A combination of treatments, along with lifestyle modifications, can help patients manage their symptoms and maintain a good quality of life.
